Section A :
Chemistry :
1. General Introduction :
Importance and scope of chemistry. Concept of elements, atoms and molecules, Atomic and molecular masses.

percentage composition and empirical and molecular formula; chemical reactions, chemical equations, periodic table, properties of elements Nomenclature of element,Types of solutions, expression of concentration of solutions of solids in liquids, solubility of gases in liquids, solid solutions.

General introduction of Organic compounds, qualitative and quantitative analysis,.Polymers – Natural and synthetic, important polymers: natural and synthetic polymers Biodegradable and non-biodegradable polymers.

Chemistry in Everyday Life
(i)Chemicals in medicines
(ii) Chemicals in food
(iii) Cleansing agents -soaps and detergents, cleansing action.

2. Environmental pollution – Air, water and soil pollution, pollution due to industrial wastes; chemical reactions in atmosphere, smog, major atmospheric pollutants; acid rain, ozone and its reactions, effects of depletion of ozone layer, greenhouse effect and global warming

Section B :
Ecology & Environment :
1.Ecology
(i) Concept of an ecosystem : definition; relationships between living organism, e.g., food chains, webs; the environment – physical (soil, topography, climate); biotic – types of relationships (competition, mutualism, parasitism, predation, defence); soil types and vegetation;

(ii) Nutrient cycles, carbon, nitrogen cycles (biological and geological); man’s intervention; pollution as disruption of these cycles; ecosystem as a source of material and sink of waste for human societies;

2.Pollution
(i) Disruption of nutrient cycles and habitats : atmospheric pollution; human activities that change the composition of the atmosphere; connection between pollution and development;

local and global effects (greenhouse effect, ozone depletion) and their impact on human life; burning of fossil fuel products – effect on ecosystem and human health.

(ii) Pollution control approaches prevention and control : as applied to fossil fuel burning; the role of PCBs; industrial pollution control – principles – devices – costs – policy incentives; combating global warming;

(iii) Water pollution : water cycle; pollution of surface water, ground water, ocean water; industrial pollution and its effects; domestic sewage and its treatment – techniques and appropriate technology;

(iv) Soil fertility; green revolution – – fertilizers – pesticides – soil health; ecological impact of pesticides; techniques of water soil and pest management,soil pollution – sources – effects

(v) National legislative frameworks for environment protection and conservation; national laws; state laws in lndia.
(vi) lnternationalinitiative on climate; international institutions & initiatives

Section C :
Numerical Ability&General Awareness :
Basic Arithmetic (addition, subtraction multiplication and division), number sequences and simple mathematics (percentages, powers, fractions, etc.).

Profit& loss, time, percentages, fractions, ratio, speed & distance, simple real world calculations,Chemistry Calculations, conversion of units, titration calculationsetc.

Candidates should have general awareness of the environmental issues. Questions may be asked to test the knowledge of current environmental events and of such matters of every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected.
